was ann's point correct? is gun violence a function of race in this country? >> well, you know, i don't want to racialize this. i want to humanize the problem. the fact is we have to stop fixing the blame and fix the problem. it's ironic that we're discussing this issue on the weekend in which we're celebrating dr. martin luther king's birthday, someone who was killed by a gun. in fact, the gun control act of 1968 was proffered in response to his assassination. that said, the day does not honor his legacy. the fact is it really besmirch whiceshis legacy. he was the apostle of non-violence. we have to go to what dr. king saw as being an american problem. he said more than 40 years ago we are the greatest purveyors of violence in the world today. there's a study that came out last week that reaffirmed that, that we are the most violent wealthy western nation. why is that. as you talk about jared loughner and white people and black people, the fact is we're killing each other in america. we, you, me, and ann need to sit down and talk about why it is america and a
